October 2017 - Goodnight Mr. Tom

Synopsis

As World War Two looms, young William Beech is evacuated to the English countryside where he is billeted with elderly recluse Tom Oakley.

This unlikely pairing gradually form a friendship, finding that neither are how they seem at first glance. Life seems perfect until William is devastatingly called back to London by his mother.

Michelle Magorian’s heart-warming and timeless story is brought to life in this adaptation by David Wood.

A celebration of the resilience of the human spirit and a testament to the enduring power of kindness, compassion, and how love can heal even the deepest wounds.

      May 2017 - Brief Encounter

      Synopsis

Your heart dances. The world seems strange and new. You want to laugh and skip and fall forever… You are in love. You are in love with the wrong person. Laura, the respectable suburban wife, and Alec, the idealistic, married doctor, meet in a station buffet and fall passionately in love, but are doomed never to find fulfilment.

David Lean’s iconic 1945 movie, Brief Encounter, was written by Noël Coward and was based on one of his one-act plays, Still Life, written a decade earlier. Emma Rice, Artistic Director of Kneehigh Theatre Company, has adapted this timeless tale of joy and heartache for the stage, interspersing the romantic action with nine Coward ditties.

February 2017 - Comfort and Joy

          Synopsis

It's Christmas. Relatives you hardly ever see and who are now very different from you arrive at your house for the festivities.

Goff has volunteered, yet again, to dress up as Santa and hand out presents at the old folk’s home and someone has stolen his jacket and trousers.  Helen has brought her dog Trumpton (who is aptly named) for the Christmas holidays. Kathy is coming to stay for Christmas and is bringing her ‘friend’ Crispin and her two cats because the cattery is closed (as the lady who runs it dropped dead in the Bran tub in Santa’s grotto). Fiona (Goff’s daughter) and Jimmy are home from Australia for the first time in 30 years and Goff has not forgiven her for running off to Australia with Jimmy and never returning tools he borrowed. Martin has bought an enormous Christmas tree ‘off the back of a lorry’ and has invited the new neighbours Monica and Chapman in for a drink, who turn out to be barking mad. Margaret is the peacemaker doing her best to hold it all together, but when the dog runs off with the turkey she loses the plot.

Presents are exchanged, none of which are appropriately thought out, charades are played with quite a bit of cheating. The alcohol flows, tongues are loosened and buried resentments rear their ugly heads.  All in all…a traditional family Christmas!

Comfort and Joy, Mike Harding's comedy, is painfully ― but always amusingly ― familiar.
